so let's say you're one of those folks who doesn't know how or where to meet new people. where do you go?
my advice is to check the newsreels on google or yahoo to find stories about volunteers helping out somewhere. then, find a similar group (which shares your interests) and locate them in your county or city.habitat for humanity is everywhere, and other organizations -- like this one that sews and creates blankets for children -- are probably somewhere in your hometown. truth is, all you have to do is type in a few simple keywords and you'll find somebody who does something you enjoy, too. then, you simply tighten the dragnet to your own hometown.
chances are, you will find people of a similar mindset who share your passions and you'll fit right in (without all the uncomfortable "so what are YOU interested in?" types of questions, you'll already know what to talk about and the friendships grow from there). it's pretty easy, like i just typed "fisherman charity" into google and found this up-to-date story from Houston: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2010/07/ceviche_throwdown_hauling_in_a.php
then, i typed in the same words with "jacksonville" in the title, and found this: http://www.kayakanglermag.com/blog/buzz-bait/593-jax-classic-wins-big-430-kayakers-42000-for-charity.html
it's a little ways from my house, but i bet if i went the next time there was an event, or if i called the organization and asked for some local names they would help me find a way to help out. it's just that easy to locate cool people who are just like you!
