one of the things that i like best about america is our charitable nature. that, combined with the athletic heritage many of us enjoy, is a great testament to the kind of people and nation we are.
the reason i got into running the way i did was because of the people i met at races. i have only competed in a few, but the folks there are encouraging, enthusiastic, lighthearted, self-deprecating and a joy to be around. the events are almost invariably driven by some charity or another, and the people competing in them know they are doing a good thing while they get a little exercise.
so these running events (do they even call it 'jogging' anymore?) generate a great deal of activity and interest. many of them have some sort of theme, which makes them fun. i love 'em, and would enjoy competing in more (if i only had the money!).
you can find stories like this one everyday and in bunches. just type in "cahrity run" or "fun run" or anything else or go to active.com to find a list of events. these stories will brighten your day and encourage you to get off your backside and hit the track (or treadmill).
besides, who wants to read another story about the oil spill?
